Newsletter n°14 - august 2010

Suzanne Toussaint, chairwoman

One is once more impressed by the diversity of the articles in this new Newsletter, even though they have in common the topic of child protection. But they go far in their analysis seeing the social and geographic specificity of each situation.

The story told by Guillaume, social street worker in Brussels, about the camp in the Lot (France) where 8 young Belgians and 7 young Frenchmen met, in order to carry out activities and exchanges, gives an image of the young generation that is absolutely to be admired. Indeed very welcome to counter the one often going around.

The edifying article about the statute of Non Accompanied Minors stresses the shortcomings regarding the way they are accepted in Belgium. To plead their cause it is fortunate that idealistic people like Brahim, responsible for the Service within the Social and Solidarity socialist Service, exist.

What we learn from journalist Habi Baby about the fight against forced work by children in Mali, led by the DOUNIA association, under coordination of Mr Issaka Haidara, is striking owing to its revelations on what these children go through. The programmes practiced by the association, although with insufficient means, attract admiration.

Dynamo International keeps extending its International Network of Social Street Workers. Véronique Martin, of Dynamo’s staff, gives a historical account of the network, its objectives and ambitions. The word is not exaggerated: presently the network consists of 42 countries, from Africa, Asia, America and Europe.

By reading the account on the International Seminar “Children, Youngsters and Exclusion” held in Pamplona, one is struck by the elaborateness and the pertinence of the reflections the meeting has produced among the 25 delegates from 19 countries, concerning their educational work with the youngsters. Obviously, the projects have to be carried out in a large variety of contexts, but the participants are convinced that their meeting has confirmed the usefulness of interconnection.
