The University of Québec, Trois-Rivières (UQTR), announced last April the start up of the junior program on street work and proximity. The course will begin in September 2011 and will involve social actors that currently do its work in context of street.
This innovative program is aimed at current and future street workers, at coordinators, agency directors, supervisors and trainers interested in street work and other forms of proximity. This program aims to fill a critical need in university education in the area of intervention to individuals in a social breakdown situation. This initiative, will allow extending knowledge and professionals skills in several areas like: new social contexts, exchange of street working practices (challenges, opportunities, limits ...), emerging social issues (mental health), the transformation of health networks and social services, among others.
The micro-program proposed by the University has the particularity to promote the interaction between theory and practice through co-teaching in most courses. Therefore, there will be a teacher assistant, expert in street work, which will accompany most of the time to university teacher in order to contribute to the illustration of the real practice and to deepen into the issues that students could have.
"The street workers are faced with social realities and increasingly complex problems, says M. Sylvain Delisle, vice-rector of Undergraduate Studies and Academic Support at UQTR. It is therefore important to create a university training program on this area, to ensure the transmission of knowledge that will enable the best possible practices. Moreover, the street work is a strategic move increasingly in demand in local social practices. With this new program, we can better meet this growing demand by expanding the list of potential candidates for organizations working in the street, fighting for recruitment.
The new program has been developed by provincial consultation procedure with provincial representatives of the Association of Workers in Quebec (ATTRueQ), the Community Coalition of Quebec street work (ROCQTR), the UQTR faculty of the University Montreal, the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi and a the schoolteacher Sainte-Foy. Its implementation has been done with financial support from the Ministry of Education, recreation and sport of Quebec.
