In February 2008, the organisation of a capoeira dance project was launched in Morocco. This project was directed by the capoeira school “Abada Capoeira” of Brussels origin. First school of its kind created by one of the social workers of Dynamo (Braz), of Brazilian origin (birthplace of the capoeira).
It is at Rabat that the first official organisation of street workers was created, using capoeira as communication tool with street children, the Matissa association. This school was launched two years ago at the initiative of one of the former pupils of Braz.
To achieve this kind of project, financial means (for materials, premises, salaries) are of course necessary. Owing to a lack of recognition of this discipline in Morocco, financial support either public of from sponsors, is difficult to obtain… Due to this lack of recognition, the Matissa project is in danger and this is the reason why the Abada Capoeira school offered to support the activities practiced in Morocco.
With a view of improving the visibility of this type of help for the youngsters, a gathering of “capoeirists” was held during three days. Coming from Belgium, France, Spain, Senegal and other Morocco cities, all were present to support Matissa. The programme contained play events with the street children, capoeira lessons in open-air, stick games and samba, dance, …
In this way, during three days, the street children of Rabat had the opportunity to take an active part in the different capoeira activities taking place. They were able, amongst others, to discover the traditional “Batizado” (activity consisting in the awarding of the first capoeirist rope, a token of belonging to the capoeira family). The children were also present at the various capoeira lessons and were afterwards able to perform before the public gathered for the occasion.
This event was meant also to be a means of transmitting the capoeira values, i.e. respect for the other person, solidarity, control of aggressiveness through non violent sport practice or also to surpass oneself in the eyes of others. All elements of a definite usefulness when one works and lives with children living day in day out in the street with all the difficulties this entails.
