This 2nd INTERNATIONAL FORUM is the unmissable event in the calendar of the International Network of Social Street Workers. Organized under the Belgian Presidency of the European Union by Dynamo and Dynamo International in partnership with « Traces de Rue » French speaking social street workers platform and “Vlastrov” Flemish federation of social street workers of Belgium, with Bruxelles Laïque ASBL - Festival des Libertés, the General Delegate of child rights, the Ministries and Administration of Youth Help, the International Youth Bureau, the Belgian BAPN and European EAPN Anti Poverty Networks, as well as numerous other partners, it falls plum within the scope of 2010 European year for combating poverty and social exclusion.
Preceded by the very successful 1st INTERNATIONAL FORUM, held in 2002 in Brussels and which hosted almost 750 participants from 50 different countries, this 2010 edition will be a chance to build dialogue among a variety of players concerned with the fight against poverty and social exclusion and respect for the rights of the child. Both young and not-so-young people in precarious situations will be given particular prominence, as will the social actors accompanying them.
Today’s Europe is by no means immune to the fresh upsurge of poverty and social exclusion throughout the world. According to the 2008 report on social protection and social inclusion, 78 million European Union citizens are exposed to the risk of poverty. 19 million of them are children.
While the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, is the most ratified convention across the world, millions of children are still victims of non-respect, a lack of guarantees and the violation of their fundamental rights. In many countries, children are exposed to physical, mental and moral violence in their various infra-family, social, political and cultural surroundings and endure extreme deprivation linked to poverty.
At the heart of this situation, the social street worker, through his/her experience and up-to-date perspective, constitutes an excellent indicator and analyst of the social sphere, its structure and the power struggles cutting across our societies. Through his/her proximity and integration into the most excluded environments, he/she is the last link in the educational and social welfare chain.
The social street worker can claim to be a competent actor in the fight against poverty and social exclusion.
This is a network of 36* countries, more mobilized than ever and which in 2010, wants to renew its commitment to the shared values of the European Union, namely solidarity and social justice, by contributing actively to building structural and sustainable responses for the most excluded people facing poverty, exclusion and non-respect of their fundamental rights.
This 2nd INTERNATIONAL FORUM OF SOCIAL STREET WORKERS aims to provide a timely opportunity for the distribution of the « International Guide on the methodology of street work throughout the world » and through discussion workshops and reflection on a summary of collective work over ten years within the International Network of Social Street Workers. A book of recommendations will be submitted to the Belgian, European and International Political authorities, around the theme of the fight against poverty and social exclusion at the European Parliament on 29th October 2010.
The opening of the forum on 26th October 2010, will take place in the Théâtre National in the framework of our partnership with Bruxelles Laïque ASBL - Festival des Libertés. Conferences and debates will be on the agenda: “Street work: resisting standardization?”; “Rights of the Child turns 20!”; “2010: European year for combating poverty and social exclusion” and “Street Work: making the invisible visible”. The closure on 30th October 2010 will take place in the Théâtre National. In the framework of its program, the Festival des libertés will show documentaries, conferences, debates, theater performances, exhibitions, shows and concerts.
During the Forum, a fun trip around the town, street entertainment with young people and visits on the ground to member associations of « Traces de Rue » and « Vlastrov » will be organized for the Forum participants and any interested audience.
